Colleges with Lots of (Too many?) Asians

Index |

http://www.insidecollege.com/reno/Colleges-with-the-Largest-Enrollment-of-Asian-or-Pacific-Islander-Students/385/list.do#

Disclosure: This review is by an Asian Dad so I CAN have some fun with this....

1. University of California, Irvine 10,450 (University of Chinese Immigrants)
2. University of California, Berkeley 9,873 (Berzerkly)
3. University of Califfornia, Los Angeles 9,784 (University of Caucasians Living Among Asians)
4. University of California, Davis 9,120
5. University of California, San Diego 8,830
6. University of Hawaii, Manoa 8,546
7. San Jose State University 8,109
8. San Francisco State University 7,355
9. University of Washington 7,155 (Wow, whoda thunk WA would be the only state besides Hawaii in top 10?)
10. California State University Long Beach 6,777

UBC = University of a Billion Chinese
There's a website someplace with dozens more wacky names....
11-20 at weblink above.

Berkeley and UCLA used to be the top picks for Asians until the Asian quota wars of the 80s, then the ones who didn't get in used Irvine as their fall-back. The irony is that the "diversity" policy ended up creating continental America's just about only predominantly or nearly-so Asian college. A decent school though. U Washington is also way up there. UCI = university of chinese immigrants :) University of British Columbia is big too.

How do I tour Stanford University or get on their mailing list?

Stanford is like MIT and Harvard AND the UWash Huskies football rolled up into one posh Silicon Valley location. All 7 kids in my family at least got admission to this school AND MIT in the 1970s-80s, but good luck on getting in these days though. Even if you have top test scores admission odds are pretty ugly, so you'd need a pretty good story of stuff you've done in your life, or how you've overcome hard luck. Other people told me they preferred a small school like Whitman in Wall Walla for small classes, this place is the size of a good sized state university.

Here's info on the Stanford tour. It's weekdays only though. U Washington has a weekend tours, but then that's the UW.... There is a general walking tour every day of the week at the bottom of this article.

WPI Worcester Polytechnic Institute Review

WPI Worcester Polytechnic Institute Review

9/23/2009

Wrap up: Faux MIT near Boston lags Ivys and best public Ivys, but outranks many other MIT-alikes for those with less-than-top scores.

Smaller technical engineering school about an hour out of Boston in the shadow of MIT. Robert Godard, father of American rocketry got his start here. I think of it like a faux MIT, (think Hyundai vs Honda or Lexus vs Mercedes) but with lower test scores. Some people compare it with Boston University, and some say it's better for engineering geeks than BU. Ratings seem to put it lower than the best public universities for engineering like Berkeley or U Washington. But at #68, at least it's ranked by US News as a national university, (#555 by Forbes) and its engineering program is ranked by US News better than many of the other MIT-wannabes like Rochester Institute of technology. It's best claim to fame is #3 ranking of salaries of graduates trailing only behind MIT and Harvard in the college galaxy that is Massachusetts.

I've seen the campus, it's got trees and some newer buildings, including the student union. Computer workstations are everywhere. The music program is pretty good, and the athletics appear to be better than MIT. Worcester has a few colleges but it's not the trendiest college town as Worcester has declined a bit from its industrial revolution heyday. The small retail area just off campus has some beat up pizza shops with t-shirt clad students walking by, though there are modern malls in town. Freshmen live in dorms but upper classmen shack up in old wood 3-story houses in the neighborhoods, not like MIT which has massive dorm complexes and lots of frats. In engineering, it's not ranked as highly as the best public universities such as University of Washington, or private ones like Stanford or MIT, but holds its own with many of the better ones like U Mass Amherst and other 2nd string tech schools like Rochester Institute of Technology. The athletics is nothing like the U Washington Huskies, but at least its stadium is on par with a school district like Bothell's Pop Keeney field where MIT is more like a high school field.

Main competition for case study student from Seattle: University of Washington, Santa Clara University, Boston University, Rochester Institute Technology

WPI better

  • WPI is better on US News engineering and Forbes than Rochester Institute, Boston University

WPI worse
  • Santa Clara University is about as good in engineering, better Forbes rating, nicer city

  • University of Washington has better engineering rating, better Forbes rating, better US News national rating

Pro

  • No. 1 for student/faculty interaction in the National Survey of Student Engagement
WPI is #3 top earning university in Massachusetts after MIT and Harvard

  • Industrial Engineering program ranked #4 in 2006 by Princeton Review

  • WPI is #555 Forbes vs #567 for Rochester Institute

  • WPI is US News #68 National, Rochester Institute of Technology is #9 Masters North
  • No. 9 by The Princeton Review for "best career prospects" for graduates of the MBA program.
  • No. 51 by US News 2008 best engineering program for college with doctorate, equal to Tufts, Drexel, higher than Boston University (61), Illinois Institute of Technology (61) Rochester Institute of Technology (70)

  • Interactive Media and Game Development major like Digipen

  • Less than an hour out of Boston, which has a nice autumn, and lots but not insane amounts of snow in winter.

  • If your math is high enough they don't need to look at your SAT reading
  • Good music department

  • WPI is relatively small but not tiny
Con

  • WPI is #555 Forbes vs #150 Santa Clara University

  • WPI lower than University of Washington national ranking #68 US News National vs #42

  • US News engineering #51 ranking below Rensselaer Polytechnic (21), University of Washington (21) Columbia University (25)

  • Forbes #555 lower than #178 University of Washington, #342 Boston University

  • U Washington top 10 computer science department

  • It's in Worcester, old New England industrial mill town

  • Not lampooned by College Prowler

  • Stadium and athletics better than MIT but it's nothing like U Washington Huskies football team

Location: Worcester Mass, less than 1 hr west of college center-of-the-universe Boston off I 90. Ex-industrial town that hosts a lot of other colleges. I took a tour of Worcester to see what there was to see in 1980s and concluded there wasn't much to see there, but NYC and Boston aren't far away.
Admit rate: 66%, comparable to better public universities like U Washington
Cost: expensive, but they have a lot of money, though not as much as MIT
Forbes ranking: 555
US New ranking: 68 National University
Out of state: 46%
ACT 25/75: 24 29
SAT Math 25/75 630 720
Asian: 6% That's pretty low for a tech school, and even fewer other minorities. It's a male-heavy student body and this Asian dad wonders how many Asian women will get on a bus for parties at this school from Boston vs MIT or BU, but there are nearby colleges in town. Asians like tech schools, but also population centers with significant Asians populations.

Stranger's Wiseguy Reviews of Seattle Colleges

So You've Decided to Go to College in Seattle
by Brendan Kiley

Seattle has its own Seven Sisters—you may recall, or may even have been rejected by, the famous East Coast consortium: Vassar, Wellesley, Mount Holyoke, et al.—each with its own sisterly identity. Seattle's are the University of Washington (the busty prima donna), Seattle University (the pretty, smart, sanctimonious one), Seattle Central Community College (the one in a middling rock band), Seattle Pacific University (the forgettable one), Cornish (the insufferably arty one), Art Institute of Seattle (the would-be arty one who will actually wind up designing price tags), and ITT Technical Institute (the one who keeps trying to convince you to host a Tupperware party). (see link for more)

What People Think About Your School

It doesn't really matter what people think about your school because you are who you are and you're attending your school for your own intensely personal reasons and etc., but to preempt any unpleasant surprises:

If you attend the University of Washington, people will think you're dumb, unless you're studying science, in which case people will think you're smart but dorky. If you're attending the University of Puget Sound, people will assume you're smart, but not smart enough for a fancy East Coast school. If you're attending Seattle Central Community College, people will assume you have drug and/or achievement issues. If you're attending Seattle Pacific University, people will assume you're either celibate or a closet case or both. If you're attending Seattle University, people will think you're relatively intelligent and maybe Catholic but nothing special. If you're attending Cornish College of the Arts, people who know their local art history will associate you with John Cage and Merce Cunningham. People who don't will think you couldn't—or wouldn't—hack it at a normal college. If you're attending Pacific Lutheran University, nobody will know what to think of it because nobody's ever met anybody from Pacific Lutheran University. Best to not admit you're from a college at all. Say you're an arborist and make up some s*** about elms or cedars or something.

Corban College "Lifestyle Responsibilities" for REAL Christians

So far in our search, I like the idea of a Catholic college more than the generic conservative Christian one, they seem to be pretty strong academically (Santa Clara, Seattle University), and not as kooky liberal as the big godless state schools or liberal christian campuses (SPU in Seattle let students be homeless for a weekend as an activity) or quite as uber-family values as some of the christian ones. Here's something that caught my eye. Again, this must be one of the schools that figured out that "other" for religion means evangelical non-denominational, which is where we go now, though I and prospective freshman are baptized Catholic.

Lifestyle Responsibilities

As a Christian college, Corban is committed to providing a Christian education for life and service. It is our conviction that learning and the Christian faith are inseparable. We are committed to the Bible as our standard of faith and practice. We believe that the Christian life is positive rather than negative. We also believe, however, that it is in the best interest of the College to be specific with respect to certain standards.
Corban students are responsible to abstain from practices that are biblically condemned. In addition, students are responsible for upholding behavioral standards that promote a community atmosphere conducive to growth. These require a member of the Corban community to abstain from sexual impurity, as well as the possession and use of alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and non-medicinal drugs. Students are responsible to use care in their choice of entertainment and to refrain from all morally degrading aspects of the theater, entertainment media, and literature. Corban students are also responsible for being faithful in church, chapel, and class attendance.
All applicants accepted will be supplied with a Student Handbook and asked at registration to sign a contract agreeing to abide by the standards of the College. It is suggested that you read the handbook carefully before enrolling. While it is recognized that some may not have personal convictions wholly in accord with these responsibilities and standards, the underlying purposes and ideals necessitate the student's willingness to modify his or her own personal conduct while under the jurisdiction of the College, fully understanding that this is in the best interest of the academic community he or she has chosen to join.

Are you struggling or have you struggled with lifestyle issues (drinking, drugs, sexual impurity, or degrading entertainment) that would conflict with these behavioral standards?

On top of an official transcript and test scores, you need your Christian Character Reference (ow wow...)

Now that would scare away some people, but for other people who run their lives at a "higher stanard" like the Kosher hot dog ad, this might be a selling point.

If you're virtuous enough to apply to a place like this, here's there "premier" application

Apply by Nov 18 and you'll get
  • 2 week admission decision
  • No essay
  • Priority scholarship consideration
  • No application fee

Rochester Institute of Technology Hometown Interviews

Well, their card said they do Washington State, or maybe they just meant DC. But for the rest of you, here is their schedule. Good fallback for a geek school if you can't get into top 10 engineering school like MIT, or alternative to a giant state university like the University of Washington if you don't mind upstate NY. Rochester has a bunch of other colleges in town as well.

Home Form: Hometown Interview
Hometown Interview Registration

Parents: Stop fretting so much about which high school your youngsters attend or how they score on the SATs. If you want your student to make it to a bachelor's degree, it's far more important for him or her to earn at least B's in high school and reach for the best possible college. Oh, and saving a few thousand bucks by sending your kid to a community college could turn out to be an expensive mistake.

CampusQuest College Admissions Information Index

This index
College Search Websites

Index to college entries:

Northwest Nazarene University (Nr Boise, Idaho) Christian University,Average test scores

Index
This is my first try at writing notes about places that send brocures to my kids who are shopping for colleges. Northwest University seems to be one of a number of Christian colleges that probably sent us mail because I check of "Other" on religion, which is amazingly the only place for generic non-demoninational Christians since they list just about every other demonination known to man.

I'd say that if you're into a Christian college, traditional values, don't mind Idaho, and you're test scores aren't spectacular, try this place out.
Test scores are a tad above the 500 definition of average:
SAT Math 525 average
430-600 range of middle 50%
SAT Critical Reading 535 average
460-590 range of middle 50%
SAT Writing 440-560 range of middle 50%
ACT Composite 23 average
19-25 range of middle 50%

25 percentile is similar to:
19 George Fox University
19 University of Idaho
18 Oregon Institute of Technology
Well below:
21 Washington State University
23 University of Washington

66% of students are admitted, which is  pretty hard for a school in this test score range, since places like U of Washington with higher scores are more like 70%.

They don't give out ethnicity of student body, but it's probably consistent with Idaho, which is pretty much white, though my church has a black pastor that did fine in a college in Idaho.

Here are their some claims to fame out of their brocure:
Ranked by US News and Princeton Review as one of top universities in the west. Well for US News, it is Tier 1, but #54 for Universities-Masters in the West, maybe top tier, but not a top college. It's mentioned in Princeton Review's Book "The Best Western Colleges"

Only 1300 students with average class size of 12. That's really small, like some high schools.
Student faculty ratio is just 15. Grad students do not teach

Business majors scored better than 95% of national business students on ETS exam

Nearly 100% of premed students get into medical school

8 new buildings in past 10 years

100% job placement for education graduates

Nursing largest major on campus

They have a lot of Christian Ministry majors such as:
Children's ministry
Christian education
Worship Leadership
Youth Ministry
Parachurch Ministry

Worship & Music Ministry
  Church Leadership
  Commercial Music

70% of professors hold doctorates (that's GOOD??? Usually you need a PhD to teach)
20 miles west of Boise "the largest metro area" ... in a state that's not very populated....

Crazy activities
* Roller scamming (can anybody explain what that is??)
* TWIRP (The woman is required to pay) More on that later....

They make you sign a pledge like this:
lifestyle expectations include, but are not limited to issues such as alchol use, tobacco use
illegal drug use, and sexual purity. ... I agree to live my life in harmony with the printed and
announced policies that will be in effect (Man do the Mormons have rules like this at BYU???)

Intramurals:  Powder Puff Football (they probably have a lot of women)

All campus chapel services 3 mornings a week

Every freshman dorm wing has its own Bible study leader (it's that kind of a place)

Sample student profile:
Tyler Hill Video Game Tester Microsoft Game Studios, Seattle Wash Class of 2004 (some of these people do land cool jobs)

Sample Employers
Harborview Medical Center Seattle (best trauma center in Seattle/Northwest)
Hewlett Packard
NASA
Peace Corps
US Army Military Intelligence (hows that for contrast)
US Drug Enforcement Agency
Walt Disney
World Vision (Christian )

$21 million in aid per year, 95% of students get aid

Average difference in loans for graduates compared to public education is $4,000 (that means you'll have to pay $4,000 more at end of 4 years)

This is really interesting: You can get standard admission as a junior if you meet 2 of 3 a) 2.5GPA or better out of 4.0 b) top 50% class rank c) ACT composite 18 or above or SAT 870 for above math + reading. Homeschool students need transcript of list of courses and grades received.;

Cross cultural experience requirement means that “a semester studying abroad, a missions trip or summer overseas internship is just part of the deal, not an extra”

No restrictions on car (It’s Idaho, what do you expect?)

NNU’s forsenic team is nationally recognized

Now more on that .... TWIRP is the largest group date you will ever go on…... ladies find a date, and take the guys out for a two day extravaganza

wingeding .. ta of a dorm wing plans a group outing and chooses a wing from a dorm of the opposite sex (no mixed gender dorms??) to take along. Sounds like the Christian version of a frat party.

Starting Campus Quest

Well it's senior year for some high schools student we know, so we're off college hunting. In my generation, we had 7 kids that got written up in the hometown paper as that Chinese family where everybody played violin and got admitted to MIT and / or Stanford (yes it's true) fro m 1976 to 1986. That's a pretty hard act to follow, as all we pretty much had to do was have a 1 income Boeing engineer dad with 7 kids to get a nearly free ride from either school, and score in the top 95-99 percentile on the SATs, which we did without prep classes.

As I dig up stuff, I'll start leaving a trail and notes for other people. You might have seen my notes on my statistics site as I spent a lot of time commenting on the admissions / Asian quota wars of the late 1980s and mid 1990s, but this time the focus will be on tracking down suitable colleges a rung or two down from the top 5 Stanford or MIT.
