Don't Judge Rochester Off-campus Charter High By Low Test Scores

Something struck me when I looked for very high and very low scoring schools in the Post Bulletin. Century was the school I picked because of its high test scores, but the lowest stuck way out - was some place called Rochester Off-campus Charter High. I could not find anything on a web search that would explain what the school mission was, but I suspected on the basis of the scores that it was the sort of remedial school that other districts have for students that don't do well in a normal high school environment, and the testimonials and reviews I have bear this out - students are transformed from failures to people who succeed on their own terms, and  this is a good thing. Not every gets high test scores, and it is very destructive to have a culture that demands that everybody must be in the top 20% or be labeled "below average" = failure.

Rochester Off-Campus has very low scores, but that doesn't mean it is a failure. Its purpose appears to be to serve students who don't have the highest scores and need extra help, one review:
Roc is a place u can call home..The staff are there for you when you need them ...And Jay thanks for believin in so many off us that were ready to give up in school...Roc is a great school the students get extra help more then usual schools. With out Roc I dont know where I would be at this moment...Roc staff's thanks for everything and Jay thanks for believing in us...

like small schools and the teachers are great. Jay, our Principle, is the best guy you'll ever meet and is willing to give anyone a chance to make it in school. We're not like other schools, we're more like a family, cause everyone has respect for everyone. Making it so there are no fights and not as much drama. This is the best school I have ever been too. Thanks for having ROC as a school in Rochester. Parents don't worry about sending your kids there cause the school is a clean, drug free, and sober environment. We plan on keeping it that way too.

ROC has been been a life saver for my daughter. My daughter struggled through elementary & middle school and we feared that she would get into high school and have the class work be way over her head and for her to give up and drop out. My daughter gets up for school everyday she still struggles with getting work done but she is learning and growing everyday. Thanks to Jay and the staff my daughter is competing her 10th grade year and is excited to go to college once she graduates from high school. Rochester Off Campus Charter High School is a dream come true.

The following are comments received from parents & guardians regarding ROC.

"ROC has been a miracle for my son. Until starting at ROC he has struggled with every teacher and every assignment given to him. He would skip school and run away from home. He was doing drugs and not caring in the least about his future and graduating high school. Since starting at ROC, his whole attitude has changed. He looks forward to school. He hasn't been in a physical altercation with any teachers or students. He follows my rules at home, gets to bed on time and wakes up for school without problems!"

"At ROC my son has found a place where he can be himself and everyone there respects that."

"My daughter just started attending ROC on April 12th, 2010 (1 week before comment was received). I have already witnessed a change, for the positive, in her attitude and attendance where school is concerned."

"My son went from failing grades to A's and B's."

"I just have to say that ROC hasn't just changed my kids' lives, it's changed mine. They actually want to go to school. That alone is a great acheivment."

"This school has saved several former foster youth of mine. The education provided to them helped them become better citizens, good parents and even helped some conquer addictions."

"My son LOVES being at ROC. He feels the teachers really care about him and his education. This is literally the first time our son has enjoyed learning and is getting passing grades. Our son knows all the teachers and administration at ROC and doesn't ever want to be without any of them or his school."

"ROC culture is something that everybody understands that goes to ROC. It is a place where you care about each other and everyone is safe and no one will judge you and you will be accepted for who you are. I have heard this testimony time after timee after time after time from my own kids and so many other students."

"ROC has been the best thing for our son. Since the day he started last year, he has not once complained about getting up and making the 50 minutes commute each day. His teachers and Jay have been a huge asset with keeping him on track, and actually wanting to go to school."

"My son went from F's and not caring about school and is now consistently getting A's and B's and has a better perception of school and education."

"Before the tour of the school was over, I knew that this school would rescue my daughter and change her life forever. AND I WAS RIGHT! I have never seen my daughter so happy and hopeful."

"I know that because of ROC she has become the great student and person she is."

Rochester MN High Scoring High Schools 2013 MCAS

Rochester MN High Scoring High Schools 2013 MCAS

From Post Bulletin A6 August 27, 2013
One thing that the local paper doesn't do with the big spreadsheet of school test scores is rank the highest schools.

I had noted from websites before that in Rochester, Century was the highest, followed by Mayo and then John Marshall. The one that stuck out as really low was the charter high school, but their mission is to serve the students who need special attention to succeed on their own terms, so this demonstrates it is a mistake to judge a school solely on the basis of high or low scores.

Rochester: Every Single Student Can And Should Go To College??

Rochester: Every Single Student Can And Should Go To College??

The purpose of testing should NOT be to push every student into college!

http://www.postbulletin.com/news/local/local-students-educators-question-value-of-mandated-testing/article_15153ec7-14d5-54c9-b936-a6a5bed902e9.html

Student:

Emily Vold, a Lincoln K-8 School seventh-grade student, was the youngest audience member to express concerns about today's current testing regimen. She noted that one test she and her peers are required to take gets progressively more difficult the further a student gets into it — until finally "you have no idea what it's about." Wouldn't it be better, she asked, to spend that time learning those things rather than testing what kids don't know?
"I was thinking we could be taking the time that we're spending on these tests ... learning new things," Vold said. "I know a few of my friends were getting discouraged because they didn't know what was being presented to them on the test, and so they felt they weren't smart."
Why should every student be expected to go to college??
This year will be the first year all high school juniors will be required to take a college entrance exam similar to the ACT that state colleges and universities will accept for admission. Under the old system, college-bound students took an Accuplacer test that Cassellius said wasn't aligned to "what we were teaching in our standards in K-12." The result was that many students spent a lot of time and money taking remedial classes in college instead of college-level courses. Many eventually gave up.
"It's a very high bar. [Wrong headed: ] But we think it's important to set the expectation that every single student can and should go to college," Cassellius said, noting that that could mean one- and two-year certification programs that lead to good jobs.
Tests aren't important?
The audience applauded when Cassellius said that grade point average is a "better predictor of college success of how well students are going to be doing."
Muñoz, who said he wasn't a "supporter of one test," related how his high school counselor advised him to avoid college based on his performance on the ACT. Instead he went on to college and graduate school

Colleges Soak the Poor to Help the Rich BusinessWeek

Colleges Soak the Poor to Help the Rich BusinessWeek

Left-wing progressive Business Week piece paints picture of colleges ripping off poor students to attract more high-income high performing students. "Our nation's commitment to equal opportunity and social mobility is at risk". Or more liberal propoganda against affluent parents and kids

  • Almost two-thirds of private institutions require students from families making $30,000 or less annually to pay more than $15,000 a year, according to the report released today by the Washington-based New America Foundation.
  • Schools such as Harvard University and Yale University have received considerable attention for giving a free ride to the lowest-income families. Yet, they have relatively few of those students, the report said. In the 2010-2011 school year, 11 percent of students at Harvard, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, received Pell grants, scholarships for needy students, the report said. At Yale, the figure was 14 percent
  • The report praised Amherst College in Massachusetts; Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York; and Grinnell College (78077MF) in Grinnell, Iowa, which all reported that more than 20 percent of their students had Pell grants and required low tuition payments from students whose families earn $30,000 or less a year. At Amherst, those students pay almost nothing, while Vassar seeks an average of $5,706, according to the report.

Who is the New America Foundation?
A radical ultra-left Soros-funded organization

Think tanks that promote leftist policies:
  • The Institute for Policy Studies has long supported Communist and anti-American causes around the world. It seeks to provide a corrective to the “unrestrained greed” of “markets and individualism.”96
  • The New America Foundation tries to influence public opinion on such topics as healthcare, environmentalism, energy policy, and global governance.97
  • The Urban Institute favors socialized medicine, expansion of the federal welfare bureaucracy, and tax hikes for higher income-earners.98

  1. New America Foundation: Another 'Non-Partisan' Group Goes Hard ...

    www.breitbart.com/.../New-America-Foundation-Another-Non-...
Oct 8, 2012 - Behold the New America Foundation (NAF), yet another Washington, D.C. entity laying claim to high-browed, high-minded non-partisanship.

NAF elaborates:
The foundation's mission is animated by the American ideal that each generation will live better than the last. That ideal is today under strain.
Our education and health care systems are struggling with problems of quality, cost and access. The country requires creative means to address its fiscal challenges and pay for needed public, social and environmental investments.
Sounds an awful lot like a Leftist litany to me.
Who pays for this little show?  And by “little show” we mean one that had a 2010 outlay of $15,695,563.  Why, it’s Leftist joints like:
$1,000,000 (in 2011)
The Ford Foundation
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Eric and Wendy Schmidt
$250,000-$999,999 (in 2011)
Open Society Institute (a George Soros outfit)
Google, Inc.
Wait, go back - Eric Schmidt?  Is that the President Obama Uber-Crony?
Eric is a member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology....
Why yes it is.  And wait: Google gave somewhere between $250K and $1 million - and their former Chairman gave an additional $1 million-plus?
Schmidt was Google’s Chief Executive Officer from 2001-2011.  When they were very busy pushing for - and funding the push for - the Huge Government Internet policy known as Network Neutrality.  Hmmm....
...Just another brick in the wall the New America Foundation and their Leftist cohorts are building between the American people - and freedom and success.
