This year, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Iowa added questions about sexual orientation to their undergraduate applications, joining Elmhurst College in Illinois and the law schools at Boston University, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Washington.

The intention, admissions officers say, is to send a message: You are welcome....
Iowa added “transgender” as a third possibility in its required gender section, plus an optional question: “Do you identify with the L.G.B.T.Q. community?” In a pool of 21,500 first-year applicants, 488 answered “yes.” (2%) The students — some of whom may be straight, given the wording of the query — received an e-mail from Iowa’s chief diversity officer describing support services for gay students

The American Atheists Gay/Lesbian College Scholarship (Dr. Richard Chinn Fund) is a $500 grant to an outstanding gay/lesbian Atheist activist.

National: Anthropology: Kenneth W. Payne Student Prize Competition

The Kenneth W. Payne Student Prize is presented each year by the Society of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists (SOLGA) to a graduate student in acknowledgement of outstanding work on a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered topic in anthropology. Submissions are encouraged from graduate students in any of the four fields of anthropology.

National: Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation Writing Competition

The Arch & Bruce Brown foundation gives awards for Short Stories, One-act Plays or short film or video projects that present the gay and lesbian lifestyle in a positive manner and are based on, or directly inspired by, a historic person or event.
All works must be unpublished, original, and in English. Adaptations or translations of other works of fiction are not acceptable. One work per author, please.
Submissions deadline (postmarked) is Nov 30th, 2004 for Short Fiction, Nov 30th, 2005 for Playwriting, and Nov 30th, 2006 for Longer Fiction. Cash award of $1,000.

National: A. Patrick Charnon Memorial Scholarship

The A. Patrick Charnon Memorial Scholarship helps students afford high quality undergraduate education in their chosen fields of study. [Open scholarship, but has been awarded to GLBT students or students from a GLBT family.]
Recipients must be admitted or enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program of study in an accredited four-year college or university in the United States. They must maintain good academic standing and make progress toward a degree. The selection committee looks for candidates who value tolerance, compassion and respect for all people in their communities, and who have demonstrated their commitments to these values by their actions.
$1,500 per academic year. Recipients may re-apply each year for up to four years.

This fund offers need-based grants to student activists who are able to do academic work at the college level and are involved in building the movement for social and economic justice. US citizenship is not a requirement but there is a strong preference for grantees who are building the progressive movement in the United States.

National: Lee Dubin Scholarship Fund

Scholarships available to daughters and sons of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered Parents, named in honor of a gay father and founder of the Family Pride Coalition.
COLAGE (Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere) and the Family Pride Coalition will be awarding scholarships to daughters and sons of LGBT parents through their collaborative Lee Dubin Scholarship Fund. We are especially seeking to honor students who are actively working to combat homophobia and increase positive awareness of lgbt families to apply. We also strongly encourage individuals with demonstrated financial need to apply.
Five-10 awards of $500-$1000 are given each year. Application deadline is April 15th.

National: GLAAD Dissertation Fellowship

Two fellowships of $5,000 each will be awarded to support graduate student research that contributes to the complicated relationships among sexual orientation, gender identity and media representation. This Fellowship is sponsored by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
The program is open to all students currently enrolled in a doctoral program at a U.S. institution and who have completed all pre-dissertation requirements by the application deadline (July 1st).
The GLAAD Dissertation Fellowship Program aims to foster and promote rigorous scholarship as a vital form of intellectual activism. The program solicits proposals for original research on the cultural, economic and political dimensions of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender representation, and how such representations are generated, interpreted, mobilized and contested in a variety of genres and contexts.
Examples of potential research topics include (but are not limited to): the effects of the economic and social organization of media industries on representations of sexual and gender identity; the formation and development of independent media sectors by and for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people; the reception of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender television characters by a range of audiences; public opinion on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues; the development and political intervention of anti-gay media campaigns; the social and cultural significance of the erotic press for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people; media coverage of legislative reform in contemporary and historical contexts; media images of AIDS activism and of people with AIDS/HIV; youth-oriented images of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, including such educational materials as textbooks and classroom videos; queer cultures in cyberspace.
The GLAAD Dissertation Fellowship Program encourages disciplinary and methodological diversity, and thus seeks proposals from the humanities, social sciences, public health, public policy, education and allied fields.
To apply, applicants must submit a cover sheet as well as three (3) copies of: (1) a 6-8 page project description that demonstrates how the applicant's research addresses the themes of the fellowship program and that outlines the project's methodology or research approach; (2) a 2-page bibliography. Applications must also include a letter of recommendation from the applicant's academic supervisor that confirms eligibility, addresses the students ability and preparation for his/her dissertation project, and addresses the project's original contribution to the field; as well as two additional letters of recommendation.
Completed applications must be received in GLAAD's New York office by July 1. Fellowship recipients will be announced in September.

National: Historical: AHA Committee on Lesbian and Gay History Awards

The Committee on Lesbian and Gay History, an affiliated society of the American Historical Association, awards four prizes for outstanding work in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, transsexual, and queer history.
In odd-numbered years (covering the previous two years), CLGH awards the John Boswell Prize for an outstanding book on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, transsexual, and/or queer history published in English and an unnamed prize for an outstanding paper on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, transsexual, and/or queer history completed in English by an undergraduate student. The deadline for the 2003 prizes will be 31 December 2002; books published and papers completed in 2001 and 2002 will be eligible.
In even-numbered years (covering the previous two years), CLGH awards the Gregory Sprague Prize for an outstanding published or unpublished paper, article, book chapter, or dissertation chapter on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, transsexual, and/or queer history completed in English by a graduate student and the Audre Lorde Prize for an outstanding article on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, transsexual, and/or queer history published in English. The deadline for the 2002 prizes will be 31 December 2001; work completed and articles published in 2000 and 2001 will be eligible. The Sprague Prize is funded by the Gerber/Hart Library in Chicago.
The undergraduate paper prize is funded through a special fund established by CLGH's lifetime members.

National: KarMel Artistic Scholarships

The KarMel Scholarships were created to encourage students to write/create something that will express their views on the gay/lesbian/bi topic. It is designed to challenge students to create something unique and to showcase the many talented artisans/writers.
Awards are offered in 2 categories:

National: LEAGUE Foundation Scholarship Fund

The LEAGUE (Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgendered United Employees) at AT&T Foundation has established a National Youth Scholarship Fund to assist self-identified Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender youth in attending college.
These scholarships are available only to graduating high school seniors in the U.S. who will be attending accredited U.S. colleges or universities. Each year, the Foundation awards several scholarships of at least $1,500 each. The application deadline varies but is usually in early Spring.

National: Legal: National Lesbian and Gay Law Assn - Michael Greenberg Student Writing Competition

Established in memory of Michael Greenberg, former NLGLA board member and Philadelphia attorney who died in 1996 from complications of AIDS, this competition is dedicated to encouraging and recognizing outstanding law student scholarship on the legal issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered persons.
Open to students enrolled in any accredited law school. Applicants must write a paper on the topic of a cutting edge legal issue affecting the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and/or Transgender community.
Entry deadline is June 15th. Award includes $1000 cash prize, publication of the paper in the Journal of Law and Sexuality at Tulane University School of Law, and registration, airfare & lodging for the annual Lavender Law Conference.

National: Alan Malyon & Adrienne Smith Scholarship Award

This is a scholarship totaling up to $1000 that will be awarded to selected graduate students submitting proposals for research into psychological issues of importance to gay, lesbian, or bisexual individuals, groups, or communities, by Division 44 of the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian and Gay Issues.

National: NGLTF Messenger-Anderson Journalism Scholarships/Internships

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) administers the Messenger-Anderson Scholarship & Internship Program.
Messenger-Anderson scholarships are available at a rate of $5,000 the first year, followed by up to $2,500 the next two years for a total award of up to $10,000. Applicants must re-apply each year. Winners are required to participate in an 8-week Messenger-Anderson Scholarship Intern Program at the Task Force office in New York City during the summer.
These scholarships are available to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender high school seniors or undergraduate students who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree in journalism at an accredited four-year college or university. In instances where colleges or universities do not offer such a degree, applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are pursuing a career in either journalism or communications advocacy. Women and people of color are especially encouraged to apply. Applications for the scholarship must be postmarked by February 24, 2006.

National: NGLTF Vaid Fellowships

The Billie Jean King Foundation, in honor of activist Urvashi Vaid, provides funds for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) to offer the Vaid Fellowships Program. These fellowships support and recognize emerging leaders (especially people of color) in the progressive movement for GLBT equality.
Applicants must be enrolled in a college, or have graduated within 1 year. Winter fellowship is Jan-Apr, stipend of $200/20-hr week. Application due by December. Summer fellowship is Jun-Aug, stipend of $400/40-hr week. Application due by March. Women and people of color are especially encouraged to apply.

National: National Gay Pilots Association Scholarship

The National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA) has announced a new scholarship program for lesbians and gay men seeking to become professional pilots. "Piloting is one of the last strongholds of homophobia," said NGPA Executive Director Ron Swanda to the Bay Area Reporter. "The best way to change that sad fact is to bring more gays and lesbians into this career field. Many NGPA members have found great satisfaction in their choice of piloting as a career, and they want to encourage other gays and lesbians to do the same." Scholarships of $2,000 will be awarded each fall. The deadline for applications is Apr 30.

National: National Lesbian and Gay Health Assn. Medical Student Scholarship

Provides assistance to gay or lesbian medical students. Eligible to apply are medical students who are openly gay or lesbian. Applicants must have demonstrated leadership qualities in advancing gay/lesbian health. The stipend is $1000 for one year.

One NWSA Scholarship will be awarded to a student who is engaged in the research or writing stages of a Master's Thesis or Ph.D. dissertation in the field of Lesbian Studies.
Preference will be given to members of NWSA. Scholarship amount is $500. Application deadline is Feb 15th.

National: Point Foundation Scholarship Program

The Point Foundation suplies financial support, professional guidance and a network of contacts for undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students who are underprivileged and/or have been socially marginalized. They attempt to identify students who are physically, intellectually and morally capable of leadership to play an influential part in the betterment of society, and facilitates their preparation for the future to help ensure a lifetime of effectual leadership and exceptional productivity.
The Point Scholarship covers up to all student expenses including tuition, books, room and board and living expenses, up to between $8,000 and $40,000 per year.

National: Third Wave Foundation Scholarship Program: Woodlake Fund

Third Wave Foundation Scholarship Program is available to young women full-time or part-time students age 30 and under.
The Woodlake Fund provides scholarships for young women of color who prioritize social justice and the work done in the spirit of justice and equality over academic performance, and who integrate social justice into all areas of their lives.
tudents applying for grants should also be involved as activists, artists, or cultural workers working on issues such as racism, homophobia, sexism, or other forms of inequality. Scholarships range in amount from $1,000 and $5,000 each.

National: Social Science Research Council Fellowships

Funded by the Ford Fundation, the Sexuality Research Fellowship Program supports scholars and professionals, regardless of citizenship, whose research in sexuality focuses on policy analysis, policy development and/or implementation that is relevant to local, state, or national concerns. Applicants must have received a Ph.D., or its foreign equivalent, no more than 10 years prior to application deadline.
Applications are due December 15th. Fellowship amount is $50,000-$60,000. The last year of this program is 2005.

National: United Church of Christ Gay Seminary Scholarships

The United Church of Christ (UCC) offers scholarships to lesbians and gay men who will work in church ministry. A $500,000 fund has been established and the church said it expects to award at least 10 students annually and hopes to double the fund. "This fund is a powerful reminder that the response to God's call to ministry should not be limited by economics or sexual orientation," says John H. Thomas, president of UCC.
The scholarship is named after the Rev. William R. Johnson, who in 1972 became the first openly gay man to be ordained by the UCC. He is currently a staff member at the church's national offices in Cleveland. Johnson said he is pleased to lend his name to the scholarship. In 1970 he lost his seminary field job when he came out as openly gay. He was only able to remain at the seminary after a church member arranged a scholarship.
The United Church of Christ was formed in 1957 with the merger of the Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church. and is considered one of the most progressive denominations in regard to lesbian and gay issues. UCC identifies itself as "one of the most diverse Christian churches in the United States." Even as early as 1969, the church took a stand opposing sodomy laws and the military's ban on lesbians and gay men serving in the military.

National (NE region) NYNEX Diversity Scholarship Awards

The Program: NYNEX has established a Diversity Scholarship Program designed to help finance higher education for young men and women from a variety of diverse cultural, ethic, educational and special needs backgrounds. All students selected must reside in NYNEX service territory: Byrum & Greenwich, CT; Maine, Massachusetts; New Hampshire: New York (partial); Rhode Island: and Vermont.
AWARDS: Scholarships of $2500 each for one year of study.
SELECTION OF RECIPIENTS: Recipients will be selected to represent cultural, ethnic, educational, and special needs diversity including Asian, Hispanic, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Black, White, men, women. gay or lesbian, people with disabilities and veterans. NYNEX will be looking for students who demonstrate sensitivity toward or promoting understanding among the diverse communities in NYNEX service territory. Consideration will be given to the applicant's academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, essay, and an appraisal by someone unrelated to the candidate.

National (SE region) Audre Lorde Scholarship Awards

The Audre Lorde Scholarship Awards are designed to recognize out* lesbians of African descent who are making significant contributions to their communities. In 2002, we are also recognizing an outstanding* out gay male scholar of African descent. ZAMI wants to support and encourage their continuing education by providing scholarships to those women enrolled in accredited technical, undergraduate and graduate programs.
Several scholarships of $1,000 each are offered each year to students in these states: Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Texas, Virginia and Kentucky.
Application deadline is May 15th.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS AWARD: You must complete the SAUIC common application which can be found by clicking here. Then please also fill out the webform supplemental application that addresses the following issues:

1. What have you done to promote the interests of LGBT students on the UIC campus and what wiII you do in the future to continue to promote the interests of LGBT students?

2. How will you work to promote a greater understanding of LGBT students/persons on the UIC campus and/or the Chicago community?

3. How will your scholarship or work on behalf of LGBT issues have an impact on your future career after graduation from UIC?

*Please submit two sealed letters of recommendation from persons who can attest to your involvement and participation in LGBT issues and/or scholarship in the area of LGBT issues.
