Colleges Soak the Poor to Help the Rich BusinessWeek

Colleges Soak the Poor to Help the Rich BusinessWeek

Left-wing progressive Business Week piece paints picture of colleges ripping off poor students to attract more high-income high performing students. "Our nation's commitment to equal opportunity and social mobility is at risk". Or more liberal propoganda against affluent parents and kids

  • Almost two-thirds of private institutions require students from families making $30,000 or less annually to pay more than $15,000 a year, according to the report released today by the Washington-based New America Foundation.
  • Schools such as Harvard University and Yale University have received considerable attention for giving a free ride to the lowest-income families. Yet, they have relatively few of those students, the report said. In the 2010-2011 school year, 11 percent of students at Harvard, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, received Pell grants, scholarships for needy students, the report said. At Yale, the figure was 14 percent
  • The report praised Amherst College in Massachusetts; Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York; and Grinnell College (78077MF) in Grinnell, Iowa, which all reported that more than 20 percent of their students had Pell grants and required low tuition payments from students whose families earn $30,000 or less a year. At Amherst, those students pay almost nothing, while Vassar seeks an average of $5,706, according to the report.

Who is the New America Foundation?
A radical ultra-left Soros-funded organization

Think tanks that promote leftist policies:
  • The Institute for Policy Studies has long supported Communist and anti-American causes around the world. It seeks to provide a corrective to the “unrestrained greed” of “markets and individualism.”96
  • The New America Foundation tries to influence public opinion on such topics as healthcare, environmentalism, energy policy, and global governance.97
  • The Urban Institute favors socialized medicine, expansion of the federal welfare bureaucracy, and tax hikes for higher income-earners.98

  1. New America Foundation: Another 'Non-Partisan' Group Goes Hard ...
Oct 8, 2012 - Behold the New America Foundation (NAF), yet another Washington, D.C. entity laying claim to high-browed, high-minded non-partisanship.

NAF elaborates:
The foundation's mission is animated by the American ideal that each generation will live better than the last. That ideal is today under strain.
Our education and health care systems are struggling with problems of quality, cost and access. The country requires creative means to address its fiscal challenges and pay for needed public, social and environmental investments.
Sounds an awful lot like a Leftist litany to me.
Who pays for this little show?  And by “little show” we mean one that had a 2010 outlay of $15,695,563.  Why, it’s Leftist joints like:
$1,000,000 (in 2011)
The Ford Foundation
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Eric and Wendy Schmidt
$250,000-$999,999 (in 2011)
Open Society Institute (a George Soros outfit)
Google, Inc.
Wait, go back - Eric Schmidt?  Is that the President Obama Uber-Crony?
Eric is a member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology....
Why yes it is.  And wait: Google gave somewhere between $250K and $1 million - and their former Chairman gave an additional $1 million-plus?
Schmidt was Google’s Chief Executive Officer from 2001-2011.  When they were very busy pushing for - and funding the push for - the Huge Government Internet policy known as Network Neutrality.  Hmmm....
...Just another brick in the wall the New America Foundation and their Leftist cohorts are building between the American people - and freedom and success.
